Course Details

This license is for anyone aspiring to work in the private security industry as a CCTV PSS (Public Space Surveillance) operative. In order to work as a CCTV operator, you are required to complete an SIA CCTV PSS Operator course by an approved training provider. On completion of your training, you shall be assessed and certified. Once you receive the certificate you are eligible to apply for your CCTV license from the Security Industry Authority. Our well-qualified trainers will help you with the final application as well. The SIA qualification for CCTV PSS training is designed at Level 2(an entry-level) and is assessed by three examinations.

Note: As per SIA(Security Industry Authority) announcement the Door Supervisor and Security Professionals are required to have Emergency First Aid at Work training and certificate. If you don't have a 1 year valid Emergency First Aid at Work Certificate you can checkout our CCTV and First Aid

Roles and responsibilities of CCTV operator and CCTV team:
To carry out jobs as per requirements laid down by the terms and conditions of the contract. Typical roles of a CCTV operator would include.

  • Remaining vigilant throughout CCTV operator’s shift
  • Maintaining security
  • Daily check of the CCTV equipment
  • Correct operation of the CCTV system
  • Incident reporting
  • Handling of evidence

Core Learning and Qualifications for a CCTV (Public Space Surveillance) Licence
Unit 1: Working within the Private Security Industry (Distance learning)

  • Know the main characteristics of the private security industry
  • Emergencies and the importance of emergency procedures
  • Importance of safe working practices to comply with legal requirements

Unit 2: Understand the roles and responsibilities of the CCTV operator and other CCTV staff

  • CCTV codes of practice, operational procedures and guidelines

Unit 3: Practical Operation of CCTV Equipment within the Private Security Industry

Assessment
Unit 1 and 2 are assessed by externally set and marked multiple-choice exam.
Unit 3 is assessed by Practical Demonstration/Assignment. It is internally assessed and marked but quality assured by the awarding body. A workbook and guidance for the assessment of practical unit 3 would be given to learners to complete.
Unit 1 and 2 are assessed under exam conditions.

Required Documents for Security Courses

Along with SIA documentation requirements, certified centers may accept the following identification forms: 
1.    2 identity documents from Group A list. At least one must show the candidate's current address and at least one document must show their date of birth.
OR
2.    One identity document from the Group A list and 2 documents from the group B list. At least 1 document must show the candidate’s current address and at least 1 document showing their date of birth.

The required identification documents are classified into two groups 

Group A 

1.    UK biometric residence permit.
2.    Signed valid passport of any nationality 
3.    Valid UK driving license (both parts of provisional or full license are required)
4.    Driving license photo card, GB issued. Not valid if issued by Northern Ireland.
5.    UK original birth certificate issued within 12 months of birth 

Group B 

1.    Marriage certificate or civil partnership certificate, with translation if not in English.
2.    Valid UK firearms license with photo 
3.    Valid EU photo ID card
4.    UK adoption certificate
5.    Signed valid UK paper driving license
6.    UK birth certificate issued more than 12 months after the date of birth, not a photocopy
7.    Non-UK birth certificate, with translation if not in English
8.    P45 statement of income for tax purposes on leaving a job issued in the last 12 months
9.    Bank or building society statement issued to your current address, less than three months old. You can use more than one statement as long as each is issued by a different bank or building society
10.   P60 annual statement of income for tax purposes issued in the last 12 months
11.   2nd Bank or building society statement issued to your current address, less than three months old from a different provider to 13
12.   Utility bill (gas, electric, telephone, water, satellite, cable,) issued to your current address within the last three months. You can only use one utility bill in support of your application (mobile phone contracts are NOT accepted)
13.   Mortgage statement issued in the last 12 months
14.   Pension, endowment, or ISA statement issued in the last 12 months
15.   British work permit or visa issued in the last 12 months
16.   Letter from H.M. Revenue & Customs, Department of Work and Pensions, employment service, or local authority issued within the last three months. You can use more than one letter as long as each is issued by a different Government department or a different local authority
17.   2nd letter from different provider to 21
18.   A credit card statement sent to your current address within the last three months. You can use more than one statement as long as each is issued by a different issuer
19.   2nd credit card statement from different provider to 23
20.   Council Tax statement issued in the last 12 months
21.   Child benefit book issued in the last 12 months
22.   NI issued Driving license photo card ( issued by Northern Ireland DVLA)*
23.   Driving license paper counterpart issued by DVLA Great Britain or Northern Ireland.*

Photographs

The candidate is also required to provide 2 passport size photographs with a light background. If you apply for more than 1 course, you are required to provide additional photos based on the number of courses applied.

As per SIA instructions in order to attend the examination, the candidates are required to ensure that the documentation is complete. It is mandatory to have documents with you and ensure that the documents you have must be as per the list mentioned in Group A or Group B. 

Frequently Asked Questions

CCTV Training Public Space Surveillance (PSS).

The regulatory authority in the United Kingdom as regards to private security is SIA (Security Industry Authority). The SIA, which works as part of the home office, has outlined that certain activities with regards to private security shall be termed licensable. CCTV PSS is also a licensable activity, therefore if you want to work as a CCTV operator you shall be required to take a licence from SIA.

Do I need to do the complete CCTV training if i have a security guard or door supervisor certificate?

The CCTV training course has three modules the first module is common amongst all three SIA qualifications i.e. door supervision, security guarding and CCTV. The common module is working in private security industry. If you have done the door supervision or security guarding qualification after October 2010 and you are in possession of the certificate, the training for you will be for three days rather than four days, plus you would be exempted from one of the exams.

Would I be given practical hands-on experience on CCTV equipment?

Yes, you would be given practical training on live CCTV systems, Control room setups including radio sets and radio procedures.

What is included in the CCTV PSS Training Course?

The CCTV PSS operator training course is comprised of the following modules. Common Security Module (Working in the private security industry) Working as a CCTV operator Practical handling of CCTV equipment Always remember, the job of a CCTV operator entails a lot more responsibility than a normal security guard. The CCTV camera operator would direct field security operators to scenes that require immediate attention. A CCTV operator must be very knowledgeable as regards to the law that governs his sphere of responsibility, especially the data protection act, which is available on the information commissioner’s website.
