The Personal Licence course, which is better known as the APLH or the Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders Qualification (APLH), is one of the prerequisites to attain a Personal Licence. It is designed to ensure that anyone involved in the sale or supply of alcohol in the hospitality and bar industry is aware of their responsibilities under the 2003 Licensing Act and equips them with the ability to understand and implement the requirements of the Act.
The Personal Licence Training Course leads to the Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders. This ensures that hospitality workers, bar staff and event managers have attained the necessary skills and qualifications to operate legally, whilst also maintaining a safe environment for their customers, employees and co-workers at all licensed premises in England and Wales.
The APLH course will provide you with the relevant training and accreditation required to make a Personal Licence Application to your local licensing authority. On completion of the training course, you will be awarded the Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders which is accredited by either the BIIAB (The British Institute of Innkeepers Awarding Body) or HABC (Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance).
The Personal Licence Training Course runs over 1-day and is divided into the following units:
At the end of your training, a 40-question multiple-choice exam will be conducted. The questions on this exam are covered on your course.
For those who are apprehensive about examinations, with our nationwide high plus passing rates, you have nothing to worry about!
A few points to note:
Under the 2003 act, anyone involved in the sale or supply of alcohol must retail the alcohol in a safe and responsible manner and conduct the sales while promoting the 4 licensing objectives contained within the act (5 licensing objectives in Scotland). The licensing objectives are:
The sale of alcohol without the approved authorisation carries a maximum penalty on conviction of a fine of £20,000 and/or 6 months of imprisonment.
