GA Entry Level Certificate in International (Speaking and Listening) (Entry 1) (Classic A1)
These are the second set of qualifications in the “A1” classic series of entry-level qualifications. This qualification is for candidates wanting to improve on their basic knowledge of the English Language. While it is not necessary for the candidate to be able to communicate fluently at this stage, the course would be better suited for students who already have some prior experience with it.
At this level, candidates are expected to comprehend everyday expressions and communicate enough to be able to introduce themselves, give personal details, apply basic knowledge of the English language to use simple phrases and interact with a third party in a simplistic way (provided the other person speaks slowly and clearly).
ASSESSMENT
As the candidates of this qualification are assessed on their ability to speak and listen in English, they should be able to demonstrate the ability to understand short, simple messages, simple directions and instructions and short, simple conversations
Candidates’ performance is assessed in two main categories:
1) Task Achievement –to understand how well the students responded to the questions that were presented to them. The maximum number of marks that can be achieved in this category is 12.
2) Overall Linguistic Competency – in other words, how well they use vocabulary, grammar, phonological control and fluency in their response to each task. The maximum number of marks that can be achieved in this category is 12.

This International (Speaking and Listening) qualification is a two-unit qualification: one in Speaking and one in Listening.
In order to achieve this International (Classic) qualification at the level entered for, Candidates must achieve a passing grade in all the mandatory units.
Twice per year, GA publishes up to 6 presentation tasks per level for Candidates to choose from. Candidates may choose any one of the tasks. The task requires Candidates to prepare a presentation about a topic, which they are expected to answer questions about in the examination.
There is no set limit to the number of times the exam can be attempted by the student. However, the tasks are published twice per year and candidates are given the opportunity to choose the tasks they want.
As the purpose of the prepared topic task is for candidates to have the opportunity to demonstrate their English language skills, they are allowed to choose a topic they are interested in and talk about it in the given time. Teachers and Candidates are encouraged to incorporate the chosen task topic into teaching and learning, exploring vocabulary, themes and relevant language items in preparing for the examination.
In order to achieve the GA Certificate in ESOL International (Classic) qualification, Candidates must achieve all the mandatory units at the level entered for.
The Speaking examination takes place with two Candidates with the Interlocutor present. The total guide time for the Speaking examination is 15 minutes, including an introduction read by the Interlocutor. There are 4 tasks in total. More info is provided in the overview.
